What exactly is Interior Design?
by DecoratorInside.com
The term, interior design, covers such a wide variety of topics, the possibilities are nearly endless. It brings to mind cans of fresh paint, rolls of bright or patterned wallpaper, and for some, nothing but trouble.
Contrary to popular opinion, interior design is not all about choosing the right paint, selecting the most textured fabric, or sorting carpet samples. The largely misunderstood side to it is the hectic one that involves the planning, the ordering of fabric, furniture, etc. This side is very rarely mentioned, the business side of it, but in all actuality is what interior design entails. It is a profession that offers a wide variety of choices for advancements. No matter what level you begin at, if you have a mind to move up, you can.
If interior design is your field of choice, there are many excellent universities and colleges that now offer programs that are required to pass a specific accreditation process. Not only do they produce excellent designers, but also make available licensing for them… FIDER, an organization that oversees the accreditation process, has set rules to cover becoming an interior designer. This helps to keep the quality and experience of designers at a high level.
The creative side of interior designing frees the creative genius within and often results in decorating schemes you would have never thought you were capable of. With the creative side come a slew of opportunities. You could opt for selling products, designing them, specializing in drapes, wallpaper, or even curtains. The opportunities are nearly limitless. With all of these opportunities comes a need for knowledge and talent. A designer has to know how to put everything together in a room, house, office, etc. to maintain functionality, create a certain feeling and mood, as well as exuding a sense of harmony.

An ability to use the natural lighting, or provide proper lighting is part of the creativity involved. Interior design also involves planning the layout of the room or house in relation to the natural placement of walls, windows, and doors. All of these are influencing factors on which paints to choose if the client is opting for paint, or wallpaper, or even drapes and carpeting.
Many people do not understand the complexity of interior design, it is no longer just decorating, it is a science — studied and perfected.
