French Interior

What comes to mind when someone says French interior to you? It brings to mind, bright sunshine, good food, rustic colors, old-world style, and a sense of familiarity. The French are a people with wonderful taste that dates back early in time. Back when the French gentry arrived back home from military maneuvers in Egypt, they brought back with them the wonderful and vibrant colors from the Egyptian tombs. Some of these colors are red ochre, acid yellow, azure blue and vibrant greens. These colors had a tendency to create inspiration in the people at that time in history, and are still inspiring us today.

 

The French interior style of decorating includes carved furniture consisting of scrolls and designs. The furniture had a tendency to be curved from the backed daybeds and chairs to the carved feet of tables and stands. The timber most commonly used for making this furniture was yew, elm, mahogany, maple, and fruitwoods, as well as African, and West/East Indies imported veneers.

Back then, they preferred tortoiseshell and marble as the primary decorations. Today, their taste varies from the new to the old, the eclectic to the provincial. It’s really a matter of taste when you engage in decorating your home following French interior guidelines.

The rustic old world charm can be achieved by use of accessories. Find things that correlate with your chosen theme, and fit them in. If you have a brick wall in your room, hang a piece of artwork there. Simply use a masonry screw and keep in mind it’s better to hang pictures at least 3″ lower than eye level. Keep one wall blank to give the eyes a place to rest.

Use French inspired chairs to help form the furniture arrangement, and try to use a rug that is less conspicuous than the rest of the room. This places emphasis on the furniture and room, not the rug. Reds, golds, and azure blues should be your main colors, and should harmonize with the rest of the room.

Have fun with it, and think old world — think French.
