Basement Decorating

Do you find yourself dreading going through the “basement cleaning” motions once a year if you are able to handle even that?  No one likes cleaning out the basement.  Why not change it to the “basement decorating” motion and stop hating what can become another room, retreat, or haven.  The dark and somewhat somber characteristics of  most basements are precisely what become the biggest advantages of remodeling it.

You might ask, “How do I decorate my basement?”  Exactly the same way you would room decorate or house decorate.  By picking a theme, choosing your colors to convey the mood of your choice, and keeping it all harmonized.  Because this room is already at the bottom of the home, it is closest to the water heater, and the septic tank.  Believe it or not, that might just be the biggest advantage.

If you are considering adding another bathroom to your home, why not in the basement?  It’s closest to the water pipes and water heater, as well as most usually being situated over the septic tank.  Cold showers from water running out could actually be a thing of the past.

If you have your washer and dryer currently in the basement, make it a laundry room that makes the chore enjoyable.  Try painting and adding some laundry based motifs, and while you’re at it, put a TV and stereo down there also.  Try hanging some Christmas lights to help with the lighting, or some lamps that fit the laundry theme.

If you have trouble finding time to watch your favorite television shows, give yourself a little encouragement.  Make the basement over into a TV room.  As long as you do not live in a low level area, and there is no threat of flooding, lay a carpet down with lots of pillows.  Use low lying furniture to give the room a sense of height and comfy at the same time.  Add lighting accordingly, and try painting your TV room in soft, relaxing colors for a nice calming atmosphere where you can  retreat for a break from life.

Whatever you decide on to carry out the “basement decorating” motion, let your creativity abound, and help you avoid those “basement clean” fears forever.
