City Living for Sea Lovers
Sometimes people just end up living in the wrong place. They may desire a coastal environment but live in the mid-west. They may be water people at heart, but living the center of downtown. For the people who seem somewhat out of place from the island paradise they long to visit, a Mediterranean dining room can bring hours of peace and pleasure.
Mediterranean style features breezy classic furniture with light colored walls and a natural exterior. The walls should be beige or cream and accenting colors should be the colors of the surrounding sea: light blue, olive green, terra cotta, or lilac. A mosaic tile floor or tabletop would add some authentic Mediterranean charm to the room. You can add a mosaic lined mirror or picture to give more texture to the room itself. If the walls will not sustain the tile, you can always stencil a mosaic pattern around the room as a border.
Bronze accessories are always a good additive to bring a sense of antiquity and style to the room. Candlesticks or urns made of the copper colored metal provide a pleasing dissonance and resonate well with the wall colorings. Wrought iron window treatment holders or wall decorations also give the sea community feeling.
Rustic furniture with an unfinished look or light wood stain will compliment the design. An older armoire can be refinished and function as a hutch while adding a classic sense of the old world into the room. Use cleaned seashells, glass balls, river rocks or shiny glass beads in a jar to create a seaside centerpiece and compliment the room with green leafy plants.
