Tabletops Set the Tone

November 5th, 2007

Forget hutches, sideboards, cabinetry, chair covers and wall borders.  If you are going to set the tone for a dining room, you have to remember the main purpose of the area. The dining room is where we eat. As such, the focal point of the room is that altar where we indulge in our continuing love affair with food: the table.  Choose a table with the right kind of top to create the perfect atmosphere you most want to eat in.

Traditional Oak tables with highly polished tops still add a sense of class and old-world style to any dining room.  Featured with light placemats or dried wheat as a centerpiece to show off the depth of the wood, an Oak table gives your meal a sense of warmth and stability.

Many dinette sets feature stainless steel of metal framed tables with a glass top, however a wooden or steel table with a metal top really changes the room and atmosphere.  Metal is easy to clean, and much more scratch resistant than wood or glass. Another plus is if you get a burnished metal top, every scratch just adds to the décor. For trendy, busy families, metal is the way to go.

Glass tops also give a sense of adventure and a non-traditional flare to the room. Although many think glass tops are for people without kids, the reverse is truer. Glass is the easiest surface to clean, and offers a smooth texture should someone find themselves coloring at the table.  A bright metal frame with a glass top adds a lively aura to every family sit-down.

More than any other room, a dining room reflects the collective attitude of a family. Start with the tabletop, and work your way around.
