The Elegant Orient: Decorating with Asian Style

November 12th, 2007

The Asian region is known for its bold decorating style, profound beauty, ancient wisdom, mystery, and culture. It is the land that first brought the treasures of shimmering silk, lustrous jade and the finery of porcelain into the human experience. Who could help wanting to bring these elements home?

Asian style in home decorating is characterized by bold lines and rich, vibrant colors. It is a blending of ancient art and modern sensibilities. The term Asian is applied to a wide range of cultural influences found in Eastern Asia which include input from the people of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Central to the theme of Asian style is the feel of harmony and balance within each room. Using complimenting elemental colors to envelop the room in an elegant yet organic atmosphere is common practice.

Perhaps the most famous name for this convention is Feng Shui—the Chinese custom of organizing space in harmony with the elements. Feng Shui, translated into English, means wind and water and originates from a belief that good design follows the laws of nature. In Feng-Shui, every color has a meaning: purple hues embody prosperity; green suggests strength, red tones evoke integrity, yellows and browns point toward earth and so on. The use of light in decorating is embraced and every minute detail is arranged to bring energy to the view.

Typically, four colors in particular dominate the Chinese portion of Asian style decorating: gold or yellow accents, deeply colored woods with the black sheen of lacquered finishes, robust greens to pale jades, and rich reds. These four colors, yellow, red, green and black, represent each element of nature: earth, wind, fire and water. More ornamental, generally speaking, than Japanese style, Chinese style shares much of its minimalist awareness. Asian style accents should not overpower a room with excess but instead enhance the natural flow of the room’s architecture. Plants or water, living and vibrant elements are also often added to achieve a feeling of serenity.

Without a doubt, Asian style is an excellent choice for any home decorator looking for elegance in their surroundings.
