Contemporary Style Suitable for Any Decorating Budget
by Charlene Hardin
Everyone wants to be contemporary, modern, and up with the times. This is, after all, a not just a new century but a new millennium. Sometimes, though, no matter how contemporary or posh we want to be, the budget doesn’t want to give. Even if you are squeezing your pennies until they scream for mercy, you can still have striking modern style in your home. As a matter of fact, this clean and minimalist approach may be your best bet for beauty on a budget. This style has been used many times on such shows as Design on a Dime from HGTV and Sell This House as a way of sprucing up on spare change.
To think contemporary you must think sleek and simple. The current contemporary look borrows a lot of its appearance from previous powerhouses of design like cubism and minimalism. This is without a doubt a no frills approach to transforming your space. Bold structure and geometry is the key to contemporary.
First, simplify—if you don’t need it, toss it. Second, pick neutral, white or black for a base. You don’t need to get new furniture, in fact; you may be able to repaint some of it to fit the new style. Does your couch have more flowers than the local botanical garden? No problem, an economical couch cover can quiet that loud couch in a pinch. IKEA products are very affordable and fit this style well for replacements, but a trip to the local thrift and discount stores will probably suit your needs just as well.
Finally, don’t forget to brighten the place up! Contemporary style loves light. It also begs to be punctuated with a few bright, solid color pillows or lamp shades. Track pendant lighting can also be an excellent choice to enhance the geometric and lighting of a contemporary room.
Viola! With an emphasis on simplicity and reduced clutter your home will be straightforward and chic. And you won’t have a migraine over the bill. Who could ask for more than that in a decorating style for this new, multitasking millennium?
