Jamaica, Montserrat, Martinique—the Caribbean in all its glory holds our imagination and draws tourists by the plane or boatload every year to bask in its warm sun, blue skies, and sandy beaches. These are the things every traveler wishes they could transport home in their suitcase for application in obliterating the dull days of suburban life that wait at the end of the flight home.

While it may not be possible to pack Montego Bay into your Clairborne Luggage set–and, of course, palm trees are definitely not considered “carry-on”– you can still bring home the balmy breezes of the Greater Antilles in the décor selected for your bedroom.

The name for this bold decorating style is Tropical Chic and has seen a surge in popularity. The use of muted, neutral tones—particularly shades of beige—and natural themes make it easy on any eyes with which it comes in contact. Mimicking the verdant landscapes of the tropics, fabrics used in decorating are luxuriant and exhibit a clear preference for animal and plant themes. Dark wood furniture with rich carvings can be used to increase the drama of the room—although lighter wood grains are also acceptable for a less sophisticated, more relaxed appearance.

Bring home the islands with your choices in art. Try some beautiful Jamaican Wassi Art to accentuate your tropical bedroom. Wall murals with a tropical theme can also transport your suburban bedroom into an exotic locale with painted windows opening on beautiful seascapes or a whole wall devoted to the beach. Additionally, window treatments for your tropical bedroom can give a tasted of the exotic with wooden blinds such as Asian style bamboo roll-up blinds.

As you seek to turn your bedroom into an island paradise, permit the beach be your muse. Employ colors, textures, and themes from the sandy shore, azure waters, and coral reefs. Use shells and woods such as wicker and bamboo to accent your room. With a little creativity, your chic tropical bedroom will be a welcome destination at the end of a long hard day at the office.
