Punky Panache: Tips for Decorating a Trendy Metropolitan Apartment

November 15th, 2007

by Charlene Hardin

The trendy metropolitan apartment or loft is the nexus of all that is considered hip or cool in contemporary society. In thinking of the urban lifestyle many things are brought to mind: new forms of art, stylish cocktail parties, models, punk rock, sleek style, and maybe even an iPod commercial or two.

Have no fear if your twenty-something years were twenty-something years ago, you can still have the edgy beauty of modern fashion. And, no doubt, you will be pleased to find you can have this style on a budget.

Every sort of urban dweller—and even a few of those living in lofts existing farther from the city lights—can have a look worthy of the next generation’s Andy Warhol. All it requires is a little planning and some patience.Decorating modern interiors of the urban variety is relatively simple. Sparse and edgy is the name of the game. You won’t find any frilly lace doilies here, that is to say, unless they involve skulls or tiny crochet guns and the avant-garde art of Hildur Bjarnadottir.

Your plan should keep in mind space. If you are decorating a loft which is essentially one very large room meant for multiple living purposes, you should be prepared to use your space creatively—without damaging the wonderful open-air appeal of the loft itself. Windows should be left bare, treated with privacy blinds, or given a simple pleat-free curtain on a bare rod.Furniture should be as simple as possible.

The color present in the room should come from wall art, rugs, and throws. The remaining furniture serves as your pallet. In the kitchen, go for the streamlined, ultra-hip looks of stainless steel, glass or granite. If you can’t do without a hint of color, try some funky glass bottles, plates, candles or other accessories.

With an urban apartment that is simple, clean, modern and artful, you will be proud to invite everyone from the latest rock star to Grandma over for tea. Although, you might not want to invite them over at the same time—Grandma might be a little too rowdy for your punky friends.
